Chess in honour of 1976 By Ramatamo Wa Matamong ramatamos@greaateralextoday.co.za HLALEFANG ALEXANDRA CHESS CLUB once again met to play chess, but this time not only to enhance their craft, but to honour those who laid down their lives in 1976 while fighting for a better education. “To us, this is a great honour to remember our legends during this time. We do this in appreciation for the sacrifice they undertook,” said the founder of the club, Jonathan Maliboho. He emphasised that their next game will be on Mandela Day where they will commemorate the former state President, Nelson Mandela. Simphiwe Ndimande, a grade 12 learner at Marlboro High said his love for the game started way back at primary school and nearly represented Gauteng at Provincial Championships. “I used to say I’m the best but after I have played today I can’t say the same. There are lots of people out there who know the game, and every time we play together one is able to learn something.
